Why is the sea salty?

If you’ve ever been on a trip to the seaside and gone for a swim, you’ll probably know from the taste that the sea is very salty and not very nice to drink.

Well that’s because on average, our oceans consist of 3.5% salt; which in total adds up to 50 million billion tonnes of salt! But why is the sea salty? Maddy from Earth Unplugged explores why in the video above.
