Space that we can see is mainly very very empty.

i saw on a tv program that scientists bleave that the plants bend the space by there weight, my question is inorder for some thing to hold the weight of some thing it must at one point have equall resistance to the object its holding or have more resistance to it.if we say that space is made of nothing than what is holding the planets weight and what is the plants weight bending? forgive the stupid question but explain if you can.

I like to think that the earth and surrounding planets all play a part in working together in harmony and in conjuction with one another as some mechanical clockwork, is it a fair asumption to say that the planets need to orbit around the sun and do all planets orbit around suns?

There can be rogue planets, that were thrown out of the gravitational pull of the star they came from by a large impact or something. The gravity of the star is what gives planets their properties and size. So without ever being around a star, it would just be an asteroid I believe.

I think the article was talking about the space between large objects. The space between planets and stars. However, even on the atomic level, there is empty space between protons and neutrons.
The big bang is only a theory created by scientists to remove the fear of the unknown. They create a time continuum so one can understand cause and effects issue of mortality and create time in which only exists in thought. For who said there was a beginning or end of that which may just be called the infinite in two dimensions of cause and effect (for every action there is a counter action) not retrograde. Dark matter, another theory created by the thinking man to qualify its purpose in the space which that of matter, say orbits (retrograde) but is only an expansion from its cause if such as thing exists. For all this, the perception of thought was manifest so creation could see its creation by itself (cause and effect).

I agree with John Bentham, its all clockwork, moons orbit planets, planets orbit suns, and i believe the same for galaxies, and the same for our universe, like us we have many tiny things all working in a system to make us work, the universe is just a more complicated version on a much grander scale.
Its worrying to think that in this day and age, we know more about our galaxy then we do our own planet, majority of the ocean still unknown, unseen and unexplored, and i believe that the next advancement in travel technology will open doors to our ocean and to space. A majority of space is a vacuum, and our ocean has unbelievably dense and crushing pressures keeping us from moving forward, i hope i’m still alive to see what is uncovered.

I could be wrong on this, but I will try and answer your questions to the best of my ability since no one else has yet.
Magnetic fields/gravity is currently being used for space travel. Practically everything we wish to send out into space will use a celestial objects gravity field to gain momentum and a proper course heading. Hats off to the mathematicians who make that possible.
As far as using Magnetic fields/ or gravity from celestial objects for a source of power; I believe that theoretically it is possible. The technology to tap into that source just hasn’t been developed yet, as far as I know. There are also possible reasons to not tap into that power as well though, Gravity and “space” appear to be the backdrop of the universe. So if they are what holds everything together, then who knows what would happen if you take away it’s properties.
And yes, gravity is huge. And it is a huge question as well. No one has seen gravity, just the cause and effects of gravity. Some day humans will know more about it, but right now it is a great adventure into the unexplored.

My feeling ( I only have a BSc in Mechanical Engineering) I believe that if we look at the properties of a simple magnet; and study it, we would slowly start to understand a lot more about space and gravity, that is virtually everywhere..

I think that dark matter/energy doesn’t exist,scientists have just stuck a sticky plaster over Isaac newtons&einsteins laws of gravity,which at the time very little was known about the size of the universe.so if you put the Doppler effect that the universe is expanding and newtons/einsteins laws of gravity,then you’ll see that grvity is getting weaker because the fabric of space is being stretched so the weight of any object is having little effect,which is why gravity is so weak and will continue to get weaker.

I know that space is a vacuum. That if you take a square metre of space you would find a few expanded hydrogen atoms. But what is the hydrogen in or on? What is the mass in? What is our planet on or in?

Let I put my question forward…..
I m on earth. My feet are touching a particular part of the earth. I call earth an object (or matter). I too am an object. It means an object touching an object. So surely there is no other object in the part of space which I am occupying. Now I have a definite size towards east (for some time assume I do not know what is there towards the other three directions from earth i.e. north, south and west). Now If I will move away from my position then what will scientist call the part of space I was occupying ??? Will they call it the part of space or something else????? I am calling it part of space I do not know what scientists or astronomers etc call it. 2nd thing is when I will change my position then whether that part of space will be filled with other object(s) or not?????? (remember I m asking for objects meaning something that can occupy space. As per my little knowledge of science light rays, radiations and time etc cannot occupy space) As per my thinking the space previously occupied by me will be filled by gas particles (i can roughly say air). It means now that particular portion of earth which previously I was in contact, is touched by another object (be it gas). Remember I consider gas as matter I have been taught it like this. Now the point I am focusing at is “In space, At any times (i.e. moment or even a fraction of second or a blink of an eye), any given object will always be in contact to another object. When an object of denser density will move in space (or will be caused to move by another object of denser density), it will cause to move the object having lesser density” If this is not true then what was there between my feet and that particular portion of earth when I was touching that particular portion of earth ???? Also when I changed my position (and as I earlier explained if is true that the part of space occupied by me will be occupied by gas) then the gas particle extremely in the bottom of all the gas particles will surely be touching that particular portion of earth (no doubt as per its size) and the gas particle immediate next to it (towards east) will be touching that particle and so on towards east. Now I am an observer and observing that from earth to towards sun (i.e. towards east) every particle is in contact to at least one other particle. So going towards sun I will find other planets, meteoroids asteroids & gas particles etc. in my way and eventually the sun. But this is not the end as we will keep on moving towards the end of universe from the other side of sun irrespective of whether we will reach at the end or not and also we will do the same in all directions from earth because every object is attached to another object so there has to be an end in all direction. But how that end will be like I do not know. In this way this universe is like sphere (should be or may be perfectly spherical) with definitely a center. It will also mean that universe is of fixed shape, mass, volume and size but different density. Now what does science say about the extreme ends of universe ????? I think it says I do not know !!!!!!!!!! That’s ridiculous.

(Actually it is another dilemma. Because whether earth is pulling something or not can not be taken for granted but it is for sure that it is pushing something because when it travels in orbit it definitely displaces something if earth revolving in the orbit is true). Any way there cannot be space between particles vertically to earth unless it is created by any force stronger than gravity. And this force can only be due to the motion of any body having density higher to the displaced particle. And as quickly as the space is created (if any) it has to be filled by an other particle because of gravity or the remover particle. Remember the earth is spherical hence the particles above the earth are not actually above rather are around the earth meaning in orbit (and are travelling in half orbit in opposite direction to the movement of earth). Their half orbit is reversed when the earth completes its orbit exactly 180 degree (i.e. perimeter of semicircle with radius of earth). This orbit can not be same for a given particle but the orbit duly exists. It means the particles around the earth has to be in a specific ring up to the farther extreme (from earth) of which the earth’s gravity works. because earth’s gravity can not last in the space for ever (in terms of distance) because other objects having gravity are also there having a specific range for their gravity. Now when at least two orbital rings are established then question arises what is there in between the two orbital rings and how is that moving if it is moving??? How it got there ???? How actually the orbital rings were distributed??? what was the beginning point for any revolving celestial body for its revolution as well as for its rotation????? and if these particles are not dancing in their allotted orbital ring rather are free to mover where ever they want in the space then what is gravity. In that case there is nothing called gravity.
If the earth is revolving around the sun and the moon is revolving around the earth and moon completes one revolution in 27 days (approx) and earth completes one revolution in 365 days. It will mean that even moon is travelling around the sun in a coily (i.e. something like coil as around solenoid) path. Now the point is how the moon is moving around the sun. Let us assume the earth is at its equinox and the moon is at the circle of illumination back side to the movement of earth. Now let the earth move anti clock wise for revolution so as the moon. Since the moon was assumed in the back direction hence the earth will have to pull it to keep it revolving around it other wise the moon will loose its orbit around earth. So if the earth is pulling the moon then what is moon doing to earth (acc. to newtons 3rd law of motion). Now keep that statement in mind and let the moon complete half of its orbit. It will mean now the moon after approx 14 days is ahead of the earth. It has to be because it has to complete its 360 degree orbit around earth in approx 27 days so its has to be exactly opposite to its position w.r.t. earth approx 14 days back. Now the earth, to keep the moon in its orbit, will have to push the moon and what moon will do either let be pushed or pull the earth so if it will pull then newton 3rd law is gone because the direction of moon’s force is not opposite to the direction of earths force. Also it was pushing the earth a 14 days back and at that time earth was not pulling rather was being pushed. and if the moon is being pushed by earth then where is gravity and where is newton’s 3rd law of motion. Also when the moon will be exactly between the earth and sun or the earth will be exactly between the sun and moon (i.e. in both the eclipses i.e. solar and lunar) there will be no force required to keep the moon in the orbit of earth. also this force will be decreasing from circle of illumination to towards equator and increasing from equator to towards the circle of illumination (or it may be reversed or keep on varying depending upon the position of moon because the earth too is rotating on its axis).
So I just think bodies in space are doing their work and the scientists are telling us the modern days fairy tales the way we were been told the olden days fairy tales.

I have submitted this same question several times on different forums. Nobody wants to address the question. Only BS I hear is that it contains virtual particles. Nobody wants to explain what the empty space (vacuum) itself is made up off in which the entire universe (Galaxies, Stars etc.) is floating!!
I too think about this “nothing”.At the minute of the big bang this “nothing” must have been created along with the initial energy,otherwise what would the energy expand into?

The truth is that while scientist have explanations for the interactions of observed phenomena no one has any idea what anything is. The more we look the more we see just relationships between what we observe. We define the relationships using hypothesis and, mathematical formulas and human conceptual frameworks. We know a great deal about relationship and nothing about what anything is. What is an electron, yes it has energy what is that, an ability to transfer it’s energy into something else but what is it. How do all the electrons know they are electrons and that they must only act as electrons. Ditto for the whole menageries of subatomic particles. How about the biggest question of all, why anything. We all have a beginning and end don’t we, we are born and we die, is this really true. If there was never a beginning and we evolved through the amazing process of the big bang or whatever, does that mean we there was no connection with the evolution of the universe. Of course not, we came out of the universe, we go back into it, but like all forms of energy we are transformed from one state to another. Yes we may loose our persona but who knows haw many other ways or in what other forms one could exist. It may be beyond our imagination. Look-at our world. How it evolved, look at the crazy outcomes, you me, discotechs, Putin the next Hitler, the Cha Cham, religious murderers, lying cheating politicians, which doctors can any claim be made for a directed evolution of humanity. Space is supposedly made of dark matter, and time has no actual physical appearance so it is can’t be told what it is made of, humans invented time, it is just a explanation of the events, we didn’t make what happens but we made the term to explain it. No one can tell what time is, all it is is just a measurement of how long we have been here.
Gravity
Gravity is best understood from Einstein’s theory’s or special (relativistic time) and general (space-time distortion) relativity. General relativity changed peoples understanding of gravity. The principle is the fact that light speed is constant (always measured to be the same speed regardless of who the observer is and how fast that observer is travelling). In order for this to be the case the geometry of space and time must vary. Space and time measurements are not constant but combined they result in a measurement for light speed which is. There are many very good youtube videos on this topic and it requires quite a lot of thought to understand. In fact Einstein developed much of his theories through thought experiments.
Dark Matter
It is matter that does not interact with any of our current experiments. We need to account for it in order to explain why the stars in galaxies orbit as they do. Without dark matter physics equations predict the stars would spin out of orbit and galaxies would not exist. The observations are only explained by introducing a large amount of mass throughout the area of the galaxy.
Dark Energy
Observations of galaxies have confirmed they are accelerating. Close galaxies are observed to be moving away from us (in general) those further away are also moving away from us but at a faster speed. This is a consistent observation with all galaxies. If you want to speed up (accelerate) your car you need to burn energy (hit the gas). Galaxies contain a lot of mass (bit more than that of your car) and they are accelerating! Why? and where is the energy coming from? This is dark energy and to date it has not been explained only observed. We are in the dark.
To be fair Einstein didnt understand what gravity was just how it behaved.Newton was also pnfully aware that he hadnt a clue what the force of gravity was just that it made planets orbit and apples fall.

My friend has just started watching the new T.V series call The Flash, I was in a science class and we were learning about wind resistance and friction, right now friction has no part on what I am saying but I thought I would mention it. After the science lesson my friend talkid to me about The Flash, and I thought about how you become a super-hero such as The Flash, then I thought about wind resistance and what would happen if there were none. After more thought I found that I was on the wrong track, as wind resistance is made from wind A.K.A air, and if I removed that there would be nothing there resulting in what I think would be a black hole. Then I thought about space, and how I had been told a while ago that something as small as a pebble ,if it got enough momentum, could go through a lot of hard stuff and keep going. And it would have to be a little of momentum as it would get faster and faster. So if you could recreate dark matter in a suit it would be amazing, all it would leave it down to is human capability, humans may be able to get momentum but there is still gravity on Earth and the fact that they would be very hard to stop if all went correctly. Please if someone finds any information on dark matter and how it can be ah lets say reproduce or recreated please tell me.

I really think you should check out superfluid.Helium reaching 2 degree kelvin ( close to absolute zero) You will find out just like me that is as the incredible propriety of space.You cant see it. its friction less. Lighter then air. Its autocooling and remain cold when rays go through it. I’m really trying to get that idea looked up by scientist if you know anyone spread the idea so greater minds can look into it. for what i understand Gravity is mainly an electromagnetic field. That field protect us from radiation but also its what keep the air within our atmosphere. But because He2 ( name of superfluid helium) is lighter then air our gravity isnt sucking that ‘space matter’ into our atmosphere. Well this theory just make more sense to me then ‘dark mattter’ emptyness or what ever the non sense they are trying to feed us.
If space is void how is it that it can be warped? What is the “fabric” of space time that is being distorted by mass? How can it have a geometry, curved or otherwise, per general relativity if it is nothingness?

Feno is absolutely right. I think it may well be that space is quantized field along with time. Just because we perceive it as empty doesnt mean it is. In fact particles are always popping into existance in space. Same with time.It sure as hell isnt ‘tick tock’ Again it maybe a quantized field that interacts with its local environment. I name the partices of each to be the ‘spaceon’ and the ‘ timeon ‘both the quantisation of their respective fields. Remember you heard it here first!
Just for completeness mater will equate to disturbed or interrupted space which is why gravity,,which is a flawed term, changes when masses interact in space.The degree of disruption will depend on energy and space time density which is why matter was largely created at the Big Bang. Because all the fields are now relatively weak little matter is created and then only by borrowing time on a temporary basis.

I agree with the comments above saying space can’t actually be ‘nothing’ and this topic fascinates me but I never seem to read good answers to it. I guess we don’t know. It is the ‘ground of being’ that everything else happens in – like one person said above, if it was ”nothing’ then how would it have dimensions and distances? Matter would all just be crammed together (kind of like the singularity before the Big Bang??). And if it was nothing how could it be warped by gravity (seems to me once we really understand gravity better, for that matter, we’ll also understand space better). And it seems to be expanding – that’s what is really meant, after all, when people say the universe is expanding (or so I understand). Actual space is expanding, not just that the matter is flying apart into ‘nothing’. One theory I heard is that new spacetime is always being created, and that’s what’s causing the expansion. My best guess is that ‘dark matter’ is actualy superfluid helium. No one seems to understand the question. A jar is not made on what it contains. Neither is space. Space can be bent and warped. That cannot be done to nothing. The universe is expanding because space is is being created because matter is still being created.

I am not a scientist but there is no harm in imagining. What I always imagine Space as, it is a Ocean of unknown Fluid like thing and all the Galaxies and planets are just floating around like a Debris in a Sea. They just keep drifting. The gravity around the Object in space, I imagine it like a surface tension, similar to what we see in a water droplet on a grass, that bends the space time. The Blackhole I am imagine as a the whirpool that sucks everything in when an objects nears the center, thats the event horizon. An object at the center of the Whirpool revolves very fast than an object that is away from the center of the Whirpool. Thats why I believe, the time itself is measured differently near the center vs away from the center of the Black hole. What I imagine is, Time itself works differently depending on its distance from the Center of the Blackhole.
I could not imagine the expansion of space, I always think the Objects are drifting away from each other if you imagine it as an Ocean.

I am a lay person never studied space but always was in finance. I would love to learn more about space, the galaxies, black holes etcetera but don’t know where best to start. Are there any books you all would recommend for a person like me to start understanding space better? Kindly advise and many thanks for any help you can give me, sincerely appreciated! Marion

If you remove all mass, material, and substance from space, let’s say pull everything into the hypothetical singularity, leaving no matter, what’s left..the infinite void seems a poor explanation, is there a fabric, or substance to the infinite, is it defined by time? How can there be a uniform motion to the stars and planets in space if they move through Higg’s field. Doesn’t that affect the velocity of uniform motion?
All atoms have space in between them right? So what is that made of, and what’s keeping us together?
Well I am not a professional but I see that as long ,as we do not have scientific proofs we do not know what does space contain. As long as there haven’t got any satellites, robots and/or Space station far away in the deep darkness of space we do not know anything all we have are just hypotheses .
Well, sorry for this late comment but i think that the thing, that cannot be scientifically explained and physically detected is usually described as a “dark” thing. That is the way we’re saying, ‘Well, i do not have a clue what this is, it should be here but i can’t see it, i can’t detect its source etc..”. Yes, there is a lot of empty space in the universe, but as Einstein would say “How can a light beam (and that is something, an actual detectable, visible, measurable thing) travel through space, if space is nothing?” So it has to be some medium that allows a light beam to travel through space. From such simple, logical question he got E=mc^2, or energy equals mass times the speed of light squared. So we conclude, while referring to The Law of the Conservation of Mass and The Law of the Conservation of Energy, that Energy and Mass are the same thing if i may say like that. Now, imagine a fabric of space-time, according to Einstein this fabric is curved due to the massive objects within it, thus we can say that mass tells space how to curve, but space tells mass how to move. The questions are why everything has a mass, why is the space curving consequence of having massive objects within the space, why some particles get aware of their mass while interacting with Higgs field while others don’t, and of course what is that ‘dark’ or ’empty’, ‘unknown’ thing that makes all of that possible, it has to be something, it certainly cannot be nothing?

So space is made up of “no particles at all”. Ok, got it. Yet “the particles that are there are mainly hydrogen and helium, which form a plasma called the Intergalactic Medium.” Say what?
Call me simpleminded, but how can space be made up of hydrogen and helium particles.. if space is made up of no particles at all?

According to big bang theory there was a ponit of infinite density and temperature which explode and created space and time…my question is how that point can exist when there was no space ..so where was its existence then?

We are perplexed by all this, why I would ask but then I answer myself………..its because we see with human eyes………we fail to appreciated our existence and bring our awareness into this world, so our vision of space time is warped……in fact we live in a “warped reality”.
when it says that ‘matter curves space’ – what is it curving? If you remove matter something must be left – that which is curved by matter. What is that?

Sooooo yeah the space question. Well first off no one knows what space is, Not Eisenstein, Not Hawkins, and yes not even Tyson. Why because we humans look at the shiny things first always, Globular clusters, Black holes, Big Bang….etc And before we ask what is space we should ask 1. Are we sure we know the age of the universe? (we measure light to get those answers but we don’t ask “with gravitational lens-sing, inflation theory how can one even be sure????) 2. Big bang is still a theory not fact, ( if you ask any astronomer where did the big bang happen you will get a complete BS answer “Everywhere” ok if it happened everywhere the how can you say it happened at some seriously tiny dot smaller than an atom, because that would be a point in space somewhere???? 3. so all matter falls into a black hole, even light but where does it go from there? (again another BS answer “well maybe to another dimension???) Lastly ask yourself this question why is everyone all of a sudden looking for Dark Matter/Dark Energy? Because no one wants to answer the really tough questions, so let’s get everyone focused on stuff that no one can see (Do I hear string theorist chiming up), no you guys need to be quiet too because it a great thought ,that no one has to prove right!!!!
So until someone can tell me what space is, all other discussions are moot!

Gravity is not a pull; it is a push. As soon as physicists accept that, they will not need “dark matter” and “dark energy”. All they will need is the common sense to see what’s i front of them. There’s been a great deal of discussion about gravity. Not a lot of talk about magnetism or velocity. As Newton suggested, orbits are created by gravity. What keeps them going is velocity. What may keep things apart could be magnetism. When ‘like’ fields are generated they repel.
There doesn’t need to be a ‘something’ or ‘matter’ or ‘fabric’ inbetween.

Dark energy is the change in curvature of space due to the virtual energy of void space causing space to expand (convex).
Rather than being actual forces of energy they are opposing emerging properties of space.
The change in the volume of space over time is proportional due the urge to expand due to virtual energy minus the urge to contract due to stable normal matter and dark matter.

Observations show that
I. The largest expansion of space occurs between galaxies where the ratio of energy to stable mass energy is the highest. The expansion rate is accelerating,
II. The space taken up by solid matter is not observed to be expanding.
This could mean that:
1. The expansion property of space when interacting with virtual energy is a lot less powerful than the contraction due to stable matter.
2. The other forces such as electromagnetic bonding and van der walls that cause particles of matter to attract are also a lot more powerful than the expansion property of space due to virtual energy.
Empty space will continue to expand due to virtual energy creating more virtual energy and expansion causing the universe to expand at an increasing rate of expansion.
We are at a point in cosmological history that we can measure that expansion as Dark Energy.

Personally I believe that space is quite full of something. Not only in space but here on earth too. We occupy that same space. We just dont know what it is yet. We are made of Matter and Space is made of something else.But it is there. Light and Radio waves and radiation all use it as a medium to travel. It is effected by gravity. A burst of radiation travels thru it like a ever expanding Sphere. Yet it can be warped by gravity and disrupted by Matter. It also has a calculated rate of transfer. The speed of light. So it does not take too much to infer that space is made up of particles that we dont know about that dont by themselves move yet transfer energy from one particle to another at a specific rate and in specific vectors.
Anything and everything, even the unknown, is energy. Atomic level, sub atomic, and even smaller that we have not discovered or understand. The key is leveraging our current understanding of energy, to manipulate it, to the betterment of humanity.
Our current technology level is mostly brute force ( fossil fuels, etc) The closest we are to manipulating energy at the atomic level is in our use of nuclear technology. There is research into the sub atomic, but what, within our current ability to grasp, are practical uses of sub atomic energy?
We need to further the study of the human mind, and be able to use more than just the small part of our brains capacity that most humans use. Until we can think beyond what we currently know, we will be stuck in the same cycle that humankind has been in for thousands of years.
